In the past couple of years I have written about fishing, camping, politics, graveyard, relationships and a vast host of other subjects. The one subject that I have wrote about and seems to be a favorite is when I try to write as I imagine that my faithful (when there is a walk or treat involved) dog Coal.
In my life I have had numerous dogs and cats and they all had there own personalities, most were openly affectionate to pretty much everyone. My dogs seemed to look at life as food and fun with a nap thrown in for good measures. I have never had a dog that was neurotic, psychotic or anything that falls between.
My last two dogs were Golden Retrievers with the need to make everyone happy attitudes that I thought all Retrievers had bred into them. Then I met Coal.
I got Coal free from some people that live way out in the country. He was a oops litter, the kind that dad and mom just happened to be in the same kennel at the wrong time. The litter he was in was not socialized like the yellow labs that were born around the same time.
Coal was a shy puppy and the first year that I had him he was raised with a Collie. Poor Coal had a complex from the start. He thought that all dogs herded everything, and he didn't understand that he was to fetch what was thrown. After all the other dog didn't retrieve.
As he grew older his life became more complicated. I divorced and for a couple of months he was away from me. When I got him back, his life was in a turmoil. He was moved into an upstairs appartment. This was really tramatic for him because there were stairs that he really didn't understand. Thanks to patience and understanding from his new "mommy" and I, he became a house dog... A 75 pound house dog.
He went everywhere with us that first few months we had him back. He fished, camped and got addicted to Chicken McNuggets and fries. The Chicken and fries led to some really smelly problems.
Then we moved again, into a house. That is where he hit his stride! He has three humans to spoil him and he does get spoiled. He has an acre of lawn with a creek and all sorts of animals and smells to keep him occupied between treats, walks and naps.
Coal is one of the biggest manipulators. He can tell you what he wants with just a look. We have discovered that he will tell you when he needs to go outside, wants to go for a walk, wants his treats (morning and evening) and any of a million other demands. If you choose to ignore him he will either pout or pester you until he gets his way.
Coal doesn't have a pedigree or a registration number with AKC but to me he is a good dog. He is a quick learner and he also is a good teacher, at least to his humans. So this is his site!
